Accessibility
The farm has an open door. This site is built the same way — to be read and used by everyone, however you get here.
Our commitment
We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, as our guide. That standard is a floor, not a finish line, and we treat it that way.
What this site does today
- Works without a mouse. Every link, button and menu can be reached and used from the keyboard, and whatever you are on is always visibly outlined. A “Skip to content” link is the first stop on every page.
- Works without JavaScript. Every page, including every story, is plain HTML on the server, and every word of it shows with scripts switched off. The site’s own scripts do three small things: open and close the phone menu, tuck the top bar away while you scroll down, and play the two fades on the home page.
- Respects reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the photo on the home page appears settled, and the quotation beside the tractors comes in as a short plain fade, with no blur and no movement.
- Readable colour. The palette was measured, not eyeballed: body text sits at 15.7:1 against the paper ground, softer text at 8:1, the green label voice at 8.7:1 and links at 8.4:1 — all past the AA requirement. The sundown orange that measured too low is used only as a mark (a hairline, an underline), never as text. Links inside the stories are underlined, so they are not told apart by colour alone.
- Structured for screen readers. Real headings in order, labelled navigation and footer regions, the current page marked, and the menu button announcing whether it is open or closed. The linocut blocks are decorative and hidden from screen readers; the phone and social links carry spoken labels.
- Resizes. Text and layout reflow down to a phone and back up under browser zoom, without anything being clipped or needing sideways scrolling.
In September 2026 every page was checked with automated testing (axe-core, against WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 AA, at desktop and phone widths: no issues found) and by hand with the keyboard, with scripts switched off, with reduced motion on, and at 200% zoom.
Still being worked on
Accessibility work is never finished, and we would rather name the gaps than imply there are none:
- Story photographs. The journal’s photos were brought over from the old site, where they carried no descriptions. Every one of them now has a description written from looking at the photograph. People in them are described rather than named. These descriptions are ours, not the farm’s, and are still being checked.
- A screen-reader listen-through of the whole site has not been done yet. The structure is checked by tools; a person listening to it is the next step.
- The farm map is an image. Its labels are written out in the image description, and the directions beside it are given as text.
- Type is loaded from a third-party service (Google Fonts). We do not control its delivery.
- Anything we link out to — Instagram, Facebook, Mountain Bird — is outside our control and is not covered by this statement.
